Support

JotSpeed is a journal that lives on your device. You do not need an account to write. This page is the short version of how storage works, how to keep a copy, and how to reach us.

Where your entries are stored

When you use JotSpeed on a device only, there is no journal file sitting in Files, Finder, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or Documents.

Your entries are saved inside JotSpeed on that device. It lives in the private storage this browser (or the Home Screen app) keeps for app.jotspeed.com. Think of it as the app’s own notebook, not a document you can browse in a folder.

That means:

  • Entries stay on this phone or computer.
  • Safari and Chrome on the same device are separate notebooks.
  • A Safari tab and the Home Screen app on the same iPhone can also be separate notebooks. Add to Home Screen from Safari, then sign in to Pro on the Home Screen app if they don’t match.
  • A new phone, a different browser, or Clear website data / Clear history starts a blank journal. The old entries are not in a file we can recover.

You only get a real file when you export one.

In one line: device-only JotSpeed stores entries in the app on that device, not as a file on disk. Export if you want a file you can move, back up, or open later.

Keep a file you can hold

In the app, open Menu → Import / Export.

  • TXT: a timestamped copy you can import back into JotSpeed later.
  • PDF: for printing or reading outside the app.

“This view” exports every entry that matches your current find, @tag, or #tag, not only the rows on screen. Save the download wherever you like.

Sync across devices

Encrypted sync, the command line, and the chatbot connector are JotSpeed Pro: $29/year. Sign in to the app and subscribe there.

Writing, find, tags, and export stay free. Export is still the way to keep a file you can hold.

How encryption works

We cannot email your journal back. The password unlocks the backup. If you lose it and have no signed-in device, entries that exist only in that backup cannot be recovered. Export a TXT file if you want a copy that does not depend on the password.

JotSpeed Pro sync encrypts your entries on your device before they leave it. The sync server stores one encrypted blob per account. It does not store your password or your entries in plain text. Posts from the hosted chatbot connector are different: our server briefly handles that text in plain form so it can encrypt it, and does not store it.

You can add a passkey in Settings after you sign in (Face ID, Touch ID, or a device unlock). On Safari 18+ and Chrome, the passkey can also unlock the backup on a new device, so you don’t type the password. Older browsers still need the password once (or a recovery code) after passkey sign-in.

The password you type at sign-in does two jobs:

  1. Prove it’s you: the server stores only a slow hash of the password, never the password itself.
  2. Lock the blob: the same password derives the key that encrypts and decrypts your entries (AES-GCM). Without that password, the backup is just ciphertext.

Because the password locks your backup, make it a strong one. A new password, for a new account, a change in Settings, or a reset with a recovery code, needs at least 12 characters and can’t be a common password. A few unrelated words work well. If you already have a shorter password, it keeps working.

That is why there is no “forgot password, send me my journal.” A reset email could let you sign in again, but it could not unlock an existing backup. If you still have a signed-in device, change the password in Settings. That re-encrypts the backup with the new password. Other devices then sign in with the new one.

At first sign-in we show recovery codes. Save them. On the sign-in sheet, Forgot password? Use a recovery code sets a new password. If you lose the password and the codes, entries that exist only in the encrypted backup cannot be recovered. Export a TXT file if you want a copy that does not depend on the password.

Deletes sync the same way new entries do: the device records a tombstone and pushes the blob. Other devices pick it up on the next sync, which is automatic.

Add it to your Home Screen

iPhone & iPad: open app.jotspeed.com in Safari → Share → Add to Home Screen.

Android: open the app in Chrome → menu (⋮) → Install app or Add to Home Screen.

It opens full-screen and works offline. It still uses that device’s app storage. Installing does not create a separate file.

Get help

A person reads every email. If something looks missing, say which device you are on, and whether you wrote in the browser tab or the home-screen app. Those can be two different journals.

Pro includes a command line: jot login then jot "this is the entry."
